How it all began
A stamp shop becomes a renowned auction house
The Württembergisches Auktionshaus für Postwertzeichen was founded in Stuttgart in 1986 by Joachim Erhardt—initially as a traditional stamp dealership. Even in its early years, it became clear that the business would not be limited to mere trading. There was strong demand among collectors for a reputable auction house in southern Germany, and so the company held its first auction as early as 1987.
From the very beginning, the focus has been on classical philately: stamps and postal items from Old Germany—that is, the German states prior to 1871—as well as early issues of the German Empire. This specialization in historical rarities quickly established the firm’s unique position in the market. While many auction houses catered to a broad audience, our auction house focused on select and carefully vetted items.
The goal was clear from the very beginning: sellers should be able to trust that their collections would be handled with expertise, and collectors should be able to rely on excellent quality at every auction. With this approach, Joachim Erhardt laid the foundation for the firm’s reputation—which remains intact to this day—as the “Home of Philately and Postal History,” embodying tradition and integrity.

Specialization: Old Germany & German Colonies
A global leader in the philately of Old Germany and the German colonies
Our company’s roots lie in the classics of philately, and to this day, our specialization in Old Germany and the German colonies remains at the heart of our work. Stamps and postal items from Prussia, Bavaria, Württemberg, or Hamburg, as well as rarities from German South West Africa, Cameroon, Kiautschou, or the Marshall Islands, are far more than just collectibles to us. They are historical artifacts that tell stories, and our mission is to give these stories a platform.
With spectacular specialized collections such as the “Waterberg” and “Windhuk” collections or the “Tabora Collection,” we have proven that we are a top choice in these fields, both for consignors expecting top results and for collectors seeking unique pieces. Our passion for these niche markets and our expertise in cataloging, valuation, and presentation make us one of the world’s leading auction houses in these segments.
Our values, mission, and future
We preserve what matters and ensure it reaches the right people.
A contract for cultural property
Our mission is clear: stamps, coins, and historical artifacts should not be tucked away in a drawer, but should find their place in collections, archives, or museums. For us, auctions serve as the bridge through which cultural treasures reach new owners. In this way, we create a marketplace where history is preserved and, at the same time, brought to life.
Treating every object with respect
Integrity, expertise, and trust define our daily work. We treat every item with respect and view it as part of our cultural heritage, regardless of its market value. Decades of experience and specialization provide us with the professional foundation needed to thoroughly evaluate and present collections. Equally important is the personal connection: we take the time to listen and cultivate long-term relationships that often span generations.
The Future of Philately
Our vision is guided by a clear goal: we aim to be an auction house that brings people together. We want collectors to deepen their passion here, and consignors to know that their treasures are in safe hands. With our international reach and modern technology, we provide access to a global audience without losing sight of the personal guidance and connection that matter most. Our vision is to keep cultural heritage alive—today, tomorrow, and for generations to come.
Founder, philatelist, and auctioneer
Joachim Erhardt
Joachim Erhardt comes from a family of philatelists and is himself a fourth-generation philatelist. From an early age, he developed a special passion for the Old German States and the German colonies—collecting areas that later became the hallmark of the firm. With his deep expertise, his keen eye for rarities, and his high standards of integrity, he established the Württembergisches Auktionshaus für Postwertzeichen as a sought-after destination for collectors worldwide even in its early years.
Dr. Ulrich Ch. Knapp acquired the Württembergische Auktionshaus on October 1, 2023, and will support Mr. Joachim Erhardt in his role as managing partner.
To this day, Joachim Erhardt continues to shape the company as its managing director and auctioneer. He is not only an entrepreneur but also still stands at the podium himself, calling out lots and passionately conducting the auctions. His personal touch continues to make WAP an auction house with a distinctive character.
